SCIENCE 6TH GRADE - (Fossils): Definition

This guide will introduce research methods for fossils.

Did you know?

The term fossil derives from a Latin word meaning “to dig.”  The scientific study of fossils is called paleontology, from Greek words meaning the science (logia) of very old (palaios) existing things (onta). Some scientists specialize in particular areas of paleontology. Paleozoologists study the fossils of ancient animals whereas paleobotanists focus on extinct plants. Paleoclimatologists use fossil evidence to study ancient climates. The fossil record helps paleogeographers study how landforms and Earth’s other geographical features have changed across geologic time.
