The American Civil War, sometimes called "War Between the States", pitted the North against the South and was fought on American soil by American soldiers. It lasted for four years (1861-1865), during which the United States and the Confederate States of America, formed by 11 Southern states that seceded from the Union, battled due to friction over slavery.
The Southern states that succeeded were South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Nearly every family in the nation was touched by this battle that altered the political, social, economic, and cultural fabric of the United States. In the end, a predominantly industrial society triumphed over an agricultural one and the South was forever changed.
